There was a time in the not-too-distant past when if your apartment, dorm room or palatial mansion smelled like Cheetos, Diet Coke and unwashed laundry, there was simply nothing USB-related you could do about it. Sure, there were wall outlet fragrance “plug ins,” scented candles, canned air fresheners, and of course windows which could be opened — but not one of those was USB-powered. Of course, those days are long gone, because a random Chinese sweatshop has dreamed up another modern-day marvel: the USB oil burner. If you’re like us (and we think you are), there’s nothing you want to do more than pour scented oil into something that plugs into your computer. Available in rose and peppermint, $7 each.

The Charlottesville, Va., school division is harnessing the efficiency of technology to make scripting lesson plans easier for its teachers. A cadre of city teachers is being trained for the fall to use “wiki” Web sites — sites that can be directly edited by anyone who has access to them. The success of Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that is maintained by volunteers and revised by almost anyone with Internet access, has sparked an interest in fostering open source online communities that focus on the free sharing of ideas.

Frosty Piss writes “MIT researchers have created a schizophrenic mouse that pinpoints a gene variation predisposing people to schizophrenia. Research with the mouse may lead to the first genetically targeted drugs for the disease, which affects 1 percent of the population worldwide. This is the first study that uses animals who demonstrate an array of symptoms observed in schizophrenic patients to identify specific genes that predispose people to the disease.”

One awfully clever Brazilian programmer couldn’t stand not being able to experience the sometimes-maddening act of typing on the iPhone’s notorious keyboard — so he wrote an iPhone keyboard app for his Nokia N800. In what appears to have been a fairly short amount of time, Gustavo Sverzut Barbieri put together an Apple-copyin’, typepad act-alike using Python, Edje, and a little elbow grease. Without ever actually using an iPhone, Gustavo seems to have clearly captured the essence of the keyboard, which is either really good or really bad for him… only he knows for sure. Check the video after the break to see the app in action.

Web analytics usage has reached mainstream status, with 82 percent adoption among companies surveyed recently by Aberdeen. However, a vast range of maturity exists regarding analytics process, data analysis and corporate understanding of Web metrics. Nintendo may be slow to get a Wii version of Pilotwings off the ground, but those looking to get ready for that inevitability may want to pick up the latest
Wiicessory from PEGO, which will turn your humble Wiimote and nunchuck into a makeshift flight stick. Of course, there aren’t exactly a whole lot of games at the moment that’ll let you take full advantage of the setup, but it will only set you back $13, and it would seem to offer some potential for those looking for some new uses for their
Wiimote on their PC.

Sun Microsystems has chalked up its third profitable quarter in a row, a testament that the company’s turnaround plan is taking hold. Profits for the server company’s fourth quarter were $329 million, or 9 cents a share — a significant step up from the 5 cents a share analysts expected. It is also a 180-degree turn from where the company was a year ago, when it reported a net loss of $301 million, or 9 cents a share.
A similar comparison can be drawn with respect to profits for its fiscal year, which ended in June.

Perhaps hoping that lightning can strike the same company twice, Sony announced Friday it has signed an exclusive deal with Rockstar Games, maker of the famous and infamous “Grand Theft Auto” series, to bring a new upcoming franchise exclusively to the PlayStation 3. The deal is a rarity in the industry, as game developers wait to see how the current generation of gaming consoles shakes out. “We are announcing that a new franchise from Rockstar Games will be exclusive to PS3,” Sony’s Michael Shorrock posted on the company’s official PlayStation blog.
