An anonymous reader writes “A Canadian theater chain has been sued for an abusive search for camcording equipment. A Montreal woman is seeking $60,000 in damages for the search, which comes after the Canadian government caved to US pressure and enacted anti-camcording legislation.”

Sun Microsystems has chalked up its third profitable quarter in a row, a testament that the company’s turnaround plan is taking hold. Profits for the server company’s fourth quarter were $329 million, or 9 cents a share — a significant step up from the 5 cents a share analysts expected. It is also a 180-degree turn from where the company was a year ago, when it reported a net loss of $301 million, or 9 cents a share.
A similar comparison can be drawn with respect to profits for its fiscal year, which ended in June.

More than 3 billion songs have been purchased and downloaded from the iTunes Store, according to Apple. The service hit the 2 billion mark in January and topped 1 billion songs sold in February 2006. Thus, the download rate has jumped considerably in the past six months. The store currently sports a catalog of more than 5 million songs, along with 550 television shows and 500 movies, according to Apple. The iTunes Store recently surpassed Amazon and Target to become the third largest music retailer in the U.S.

Perhaps hoping that lightning can strike the same company twice, Sony announced Friday it has signed an exclusive deal with Rockstar Games, maker of the famous and infamous “Grand Theft Auto” series, to bring a new upcoming franchise exclusively to the PlayStation 3. The deal is a rarity in the industry, as game developers wait to see how the current generation of gaming consoles shakes out. “We are announcing that a new franchise from Rockstar Games will be exclusive to PS3,” Sony’s Michael Shorrock posted on the company’s official PlayStation blog.
