Dekortage writes “Prior to its much-hyped launch on June 29, Apple has announced upgrades to its battery life (almost 40% more than originally announced) and scratch resistance (using “optical quality glass” rather than plastics). The announcement also includes a comparison chart pitting the iPhone against smartphones from Nokia, Samsung, Palm, and Blackberry.”

ClaraBow writes “Apple reports that it took Apple just two days to reach 1 million downloads of its newest Safari Web browser for Windows. If these downloads manifested into regular Safari users, then we just might have a third major browser on the Windows platform. If Safari can obtain a 10% market share on Windows, then it would further weaken IE’s position and give standards-based browsers more leverage with developers.”Read more of this story at Slashdot.

IMSafer supports Mac OSX versions 10.3.9 through 10.4.x We have bumped into several issues with differences between the two minor versions of OSX 10.3 and 10.4. For instance the ps command has additional options in OSX version 10.4. We tend to write our code for 10.4 then back port it to 10.3.9. So issues like this tend to cause minor road blocks. The most recent was use of launchd verses StartupItems, Apple plans to not support StartItems in the future however 10.3.9 only provides StartupItems. So in order to handle some of these issues we rely on the scripting available in Apple’s PackageManager. One short coming of the PackageManager is that it only provides a few environment variables to the installation scripts. One of the variables I wish was available would be the version currently running operating system. I know that there are ways to use the unix command uname [...]

portscan writes “This week’s Economist has a special report on Apple, Inc. and innovation. ‘The fourth lesson from Apple is to “fail wisely”. The Macintosh was born from the wreckage of the Lisa, an earlier product that flopped; the iPhone is a response to the failure of Apple’s original music phone, produced in conjunction with Motorola. Both times, Apple learned from its mistakes and tried again. Its recent computers have been based on technology developed at NeXT, a company Mr Jobs set up in the 1980s that appeared to have failed and was then acquired by Apple. The wider lesson is not to stigmatize failure but to tolerate it and learn from it: Europe’s inability to create a rival to Silicon Valley owes much to its tougher bankruptcy laws.’ There is also an article on the business of the iPhone and the future of the company. “

turnitover sends us to eWEEK for an appreciation of the Apple II on the 30th anniversary of its shipping. An overview of the history of the Apple II puts it in context. A nice tidbit: how important the floppy drive was to sales. The article quotes Sellam Ismail, the proprietor of VintageTech, which maintains archives of computers, documents, and software: “You could think of the Apple II’s importance on two levels — the Woz level and the Steve Jobs level.” The former refers to its allure to hackers, and the latter to its appliance-like polish, a first for its time, There is also an interview with Woz, who says, “[A]t the start there were no computers in the home — we had to make the word computer compatible with homes.”
