Apple is readying itself to meet a midnight deadline on Wednesday to respond to the European Commission’s antitrust concerns over the pricing of songs on its iTunes online music store. At the start of the month, the commission extended a deadline for Apple and three “major” unnamed record companies to respond to concerns to June 20 after an original deadline expired. The commission said one record company responded in time of the first deadline, set for midnight on June 4.

It wasn’t too surprising that CEO Steve Jobs reasserted Apple’s commitment to computer products in his keynote speech Monday at the World Wide Developers Conference — it is, after all, a conference focused primarily on developers of computer software and products. Even so, for all its success with the iPod and all the excitement surrounding the forthcoming iPhone, it would be a mistake to doubt that Apple is still, first and foremost, a computer company, Bryan Chaffin, an editor with the Mac Observer, told MacNewsWorld.

Amid the hype surrounding the launch of Apple’s iPhone later this month, Credit Suisse analyst Robert Semple said many investors wonder whether consumers will pay a steep premium for a luxury item. Semple believes they will, because consumers often “trade up” for fancy gadgets that offer lots of bells and whistles, he noted. Earlier this year, Apple unveiled its latest product, the iPhone smartphone. The iPhone will offer cell phone service through Cingular, a digital music player and an Internet connection allowing users to surf the Web and check e-mail.

They didn’t introduce themselves by saying “Hello, I’m a Mac,” “and I’m a PC” — but the cheeky Apple advertisements ribbing Microsoft were never far from the surface as the tech companies’ founders, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, appeared on stage together for the first time in a decade. “The art of those commercials is not to be mean. It’s for the guys to like each other,” Jobs said, raising a laugh from a Silicon Valley audience, and a disbelieving look from Gates. “PC guy is what makes it work, PC guy is great.” Gates gave his chin a sceptical rub: “Well, his mother loves him.”

The amazing Apple hype machine soon could help Sprint Nextel sell bunches of music-playing wireless phones. The debut of the much-heralded iPhone is thought to be imminent, though Apple and AT&T executives remain mum on the exact timing. Apple, which is making the device, and AT&T, which is providing the wireless network for the iPhone, are positioned to be the prime beneficiaries of the new product. However, other companies also are likely to reap the rewards of new business as consumer attention increasingly turns to handheld portable stereos that also can make calls.

Apple shares rebounded on Thursday after tumbling nearly 3 percent Wednesday under the weight of false rumors regarding product delays. The precipitous drop began when technology news blog Engadget.com reported that Apple was planning to postpone the launch of both its much-anticipated iPhone and the next version of its Mac OS X operating system, Leopard. The information was soon discovered to be bogus — but not soon enough to prevent some major financial ramifications.
