The chip industry’s trade group drastically slashed its outlook for 2007 sales, citing severe declines in average prices of processors such as NAND flash. The Semiconductor Industry Association now expects worldwide microchip sales to grow 1.8 percent this year to $252 billion. Previously, the organization had predicted chip sales would grow 10 percent to $273.8 billion. Scott McNealy is an IT industry idol. Not only did he cofound Sun Microsystems 25 years ago, but he is also devoted to open source technologies and is known for throwing high-profile barbs at competitors. In 2006, McNealy passed on his CEO job to Jonathan Schwartz, SUN’s former COO, and continued as chairman of Sun Microsystems and Sun Federal. On April 19, one day before an open source advocate protested Bill Gates’ visit to Tsinghua University in Beijing, McNealy, who lives in a Microsoft-free household and believes everyone should have a smart Java chip behind their ears, sat down with China Daily reporter Wang Xing to talk about his experiences.

Bringing services-oriented architectures to life is a lot like delivering a baby — it requires a copious nurturing, understanding, labor and ultimately … pushing. So far, the job openings for SOA midwives outstrip the available pool of talent. These are great jobs: transforming companies and industries, working at the highest levels of business and technology, having a huge impact on productivity and competition. Great title on the resume, too. Given the demand, the pay ought to be very good, even if the hours and stress are long and high, respectfully.
