Have you ever walked into a big box store and seen scores of half-full shopping carts scattered throughout the aisles? It would seem unlikely, but for e-commerce retailers, abandoned carts are more common than you think. Shopping cart abandonment has existed since the dawn of the e-cart, but how can retailers determine why customers leave? What can they do to reduce shopping cart abandonment and ultimately increase online sales? Customers leave for various reasons, the most common being high shipping costs and requests for registration.

When Pierre Omidyar founded eBay 12 years ago, he wanted to build the world’s most efficient marketplace. At the very least, he launched the most comprehensive one. Today eBay is a conglomeration of Web sites where people sell everything from car parts to carp arts. However, with $60 billion worth of goods changing hands on eBay’s worldwide sites this year, all that stuff has a downside: It can be a drag to pick something to buy. If you were browsing for a video game system, how would you begin to choose among the 1,342 Nintendo Wiis listed on eBay one day this week?

The Internet is full of health advice. A Google search for hypertension produces nearly 35 million choices, while obesity scores almost 29 million and prostate cancer hits 19.5 million. Some people might think that’s enough, but Jeff Bohnson thinks there’s room for one more. A veteran of the TV business, Bohnson believes his startup company can make its way in this crowded field by delivering credible health information through highly polished high-definition videos. He proposes to make content free, making money on ads embedded in the videos, and he won’t limit distribution to the Web.

With all the press rogue Internet pharmacies have received in recent months for selling prescription drugs illegally, it’s tempting to assume that there must be similar sites — or maybe even the same ones — trafficking in illicit drugs as well. After all, with all the anonymity the Internet provides, if you can buy Vicodin online without a prescription, then surely you can also buy, say, heroin just as easily — or so you might assume. However, you’d be wrong.
