Blockbuster will offer high-definition movies in the Blu-ray format in all of its stores, the company said, favoring Sony’s approach for next-generation DVDs and dealing a blow to the rival HD DVD format. The movie rental giant will continue to offer consumers the option of getting HD-DVD movies through the mail through its Web-based rental program and would stock them in “a select number of stores.” Still, the move provides a huge boost to Blu-ray, one that could tilt the scales toward the format.

In 1998, Napster took college campuses by storm and quickly ushered in an era where anyone could download any song they wanted without paying for it. The record labels were caught off guard and spent years debating the best way to respond. A flurry of lawsuits directed against consumers generated plenty of ill will and bad press but did not stop the flow of unauthorized tracks. Licensed digital music, conversely, trickled into the market, and it was not until 2002, four years after the advent of peer-to-peer file trading, that authorized digital tracks made their debut on iTunes.

Electronics maker Toshiba lowered its sales target for high-definition DVD players and recorders based on slumping sales figures in the United States. The Tokyo-based company now expects to sell 1 million of its optical disc players in the country by the end of this year, down 44 percent from its previous estimate of 1.8 million unit sales. The sales correction also comes at a critical moment in the heated format war between Toshiba and a consortium backed by Sony. On store shelves, Toshiba’s HD DVD players are pitted against Blu-ray Disc machines.
