The British Board of Film Classification on Tuesday put the kibosh on the scheduled July 13 release of “Manhunt 2″ in that country. The independent board, established in 1912, rejected the video game headed to Sony’s PlayStation 2 and Nintendo’s Wii because of its “unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying and the sheer lack of alternative pleasures on offer to the gamer.” Rejecting a work is a serious action, noted David Cooke, BBFC director.

The Church of England on Wednesday urged the people of Japan to join its campaign against a violent Sony computer game that allegedly uses a British cathedral as a backdrop. Also, the church’s anti-Sony campaign appeared to win the sympathy of Prime Minister Tony Blair. During Blair’s weekly session in the House of Commons, he urged Sony to focus on their social obligations and not just profits. The debate began Saturday when the church said Sony had not asked for permission to use Manchester cathedral in the game and demanded an apology.

Sony’s video game unit said Wednesday it is talking with the Church of England about a complaint that a famous cathedral is the scene of a violent shooting game for the new PlayStation 3 console. Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson Nanako Kato declined to give details of the talks and said more time may be needed for an agreement because the problem is complex. “This is a sensitive topic,” Kato said. “Many historical buildings are used in entertainment such as movies, including Godzilla and the Tokyo Tower and King Kong in Manhattan.”

Sony, maker of the PlayStation line of gaming consoles, is reportedly in hot water with the Church of England, which has accused the company of desecrating one of its churches through its representation in a video game. At issue is the depiction of the Manchester Cathedral in the video game “Resistance: Fall of Man.” The game, created by developer Insomniac, uses the 800-year-old cathedral as the location for a pitched battle between alien invaders and British and American soldiers within the cathedral nave.
