Sony chief executive Howard Stringer says his company is trying to decide by how much it will cut the price of its PlayStation 3 video game console, which consumers want reduced, according to a report. “That is what we are studying at the moment. That’s what we are trying to refine,” a newspaper quoted Stringer as saying. Stringer admitted that Sony faced tough competition from rival Nintendo’s Wii video game console, which has been selling better the PS3 and has a lower price.

The Church of England on Wednesday urged the people of Japan to join its campaign against a violent Sony computer game that allegedly uses a British cathedral as a backdrop. Also, the church’s anti-Sony campaign appeared to win the sympathy of Prime Minister Tony Blair. During Blair’s weekly session in the House of Commons, he urged Sony to focus on their social obligations and not just profits. The debate began Saturday when the church said Sony had not asked for permission to use Manchester cathedral in the game and demanded an apology.

Sony’s video game unit said Wednesday it is talking with the Church of England about a complaint that a famous cathedral is the scene of a violent shooting game for the new PlayStation 3 console. Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson Nanako Kato declined to give details of the talks and said more time may be needed for an agreement because the problem is complex. “This is a sensitive topic,” Kato said. “Many historical buildings are used in entertainment such as movies, including Godzilla and the Tokyo Tower and King Kong in Manhattan.”

Sony, maker of the PlayStation line of gaming consoles, is reportedly in hot water with the Church of England, which has accused the company of desecrating one of its churches through its representation in a video game. At issue is the depiction of the Manchester Cathedral in the video game “Resistance: Fall of Man.” The game, created by developer Insomniac, uses the 800-year-old cathedral as the location for a pitched battle between alien invaders and British and American soldiers within the cathedral nave.

Forget Nintendinitis — the new affliction for those who enjoy gaming just a little too much may be “Acute Wiiitis,” which was first reported Thursday in a brief posted to the New England Journal of Medicine’s Web site. “A healthy 29-year-old medical resident awoke one Sunday morning with intense pain in the right shoulder,” wrote Dr. Julio Bonis of the Research Group in Biomedical Informatics in Barcelona, Spain. “He did not recall any recent injuries or trauma and had not participated in any sports or physical exercise recently.”
