The platform consists of quad-core Xeon processors in an Intel 5000X chipset-based motherboard, along with FBDIMM (Fully Buffered DIMM) serial memory. A follow-on article at HotHardWare goes into significantly more detail on the platform and showcases many more performance metrics on a Windows Vista 64-bit installation. The POV-Ray and Cinebench 95 benchmark numbers alone are something to smile about. ‘Intel’s V8 isn’t about promoting a platform as much as it is a show of strength and a glimpse of things to come. Multicore chips are their focus for the future, and researchers at the company are working on methods to adapt them for specific uses. The article cites an example were the majority of the cores are x86, with some accelerators and embedded graphics cores added on for added functionality. “Intel is also tinkering with ways to let multicore chips share caches, pools of memory embedded in processors for rapid data access. Cores on many dual- and quad-core chips on the market today share caches, but it’s a somewhat manageable problem. “When you get to eight and 16 cores, it can get pretty complicated,” Bautista said. The technology would prioritize operations. Might E Mouse writes “While Intel’s 3-series chipsets support Robson/Turbo Memory, the general consensus amongst motherboard manufacturers at Computex is that we’re not going to see the technology on the desktop until next year at the earliest. Threaded writes with news from Ars that Intel has announced major updates to its C++ and Fortran tools. The new compilers are Intel’s first that are capable of doing thread-level optimization and auto-vectorization simultaneously in a single pass. “On the data parallelism side, the Intel C++ Compiler and Fortran Professional Editions both sport improved auto-vectorization features that can target Intel’s new SSE4 extensions. For thread-level parallelism, the compilers support the use of Intel’s Thread Building Blocks for automatic thread-level optimization that takes place simultaneously with auto-vectorization… Intel is encouraging the widespread use of its Intel Threading Tools as an interface to its multicore processors. The company’s CTO, Justin Rattner, held a demonstration of the chip for a group of reports last week. Intel will be presenting a paper on the project at the International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco this week. ‘The chip is capable of producing 1 trillion floating-point operations per second, known as a teraflop. That’s a level of performance that required 2,500 square feet of large computers a decade ago. Intel first disclosed it had built a prototype 80-core processor during last fall’s Intel Developer Forum, when CEO Paul Otellini promised to deliver the chip within five years.’”

Inevitable comparisons will be made between the two (especially since OLPC’s chairman Nicholas Negroponte called Intel’s move “predatory”), so Linux.com’s Tina Gasperson and her kids took a Classmate PC for a test run to see how it does in the real world. The upshot? Good battery life, easy to use, and great with ketchup. ‘The Classmate is so adorably cozy it make you want to snuggle up on a comfy couch or lean back on some pillows on the floor while you surf. Good thing wireless is built right in. Too bad the typical Linux foibles apply. mikemuch writes “The new P35 and G33 chipsets, codenamed ‘Bear Lake’ are now available. They have a new memory controller that supports DDR3 RAM at up to 1333MHz, a new southbridge, and will support the upcoming 45nm Penryn CPUs. They don’t yet have an actually new and different GPU — their GMA 3100 is pretty much the same as the GMA 3000 of the G965 chipset.”
