Since January, when it was first announced, the iPhone has captivated consumers, Wall Street investors and the media as the right product at the right time. Apple CEO Steve Jobs has positioned it as the most advanced meeting of the Internet and wireless technology, with an iPod thrown in for good measure. It looks really cool, and unlike any phone before it. For Apple, the release of the iPhone promises to effectively double the company’s revenue within just a few years, based on the worldwide thirst for cell phones.

Weeks after announcing an agreement with YouTube to allow Apple TV owners to access the Web TV portal’s content on their television screens, Apple on Wednesday promised future buyers of the yet-to-be-released iPhone that they, too, will have access to YouTube via a browsing application built into the phone. Judging by the few glimpses of the iPhone Apple has afforded the public, the device’s 3.5-inch display appears to be amazingly clear and crisp; however, most YouTube videos aren’t known to be particularly high-quality in the first place.

AT&T is bracing for a consumer frenzy when the hotly awaited Apple iPhone hits stores June 29 and expects much of that interest to come from the customers of its rivals, CEO Randall Stephenson said Tuesday. Of the more than 1 million people who have sought more iPhone information from the companies, nearly 40 percent are not AT&T wireless subscribers, Stephenson said, addressing an audience at NXTcomm, the telecommunications industry’s annual show. “We’re gearing up for this big time,” Stephenson said. “We’re hiring and training hundreds of new employees to handle the rush.”

Apple has strengthened two of the iPhone’s Achilles’ heels by boosting battery life and adding an optical-quality glass screen. The first potential problem, mediocre battery life, has been remedied with significantly stronger power cell. Instead of just five hours of talk time, as reported by Apple when it first showed the iPhone in January, the new and improved iPhone will deliver eight hours, according the company. Internet use increased by one hour to up to six hours, video playback increased two hours, now up to seven hours, and audio playback jumped from 16 hours to 24 hours.
