Everybody’s talking about the iPhone — what it will do, what it won’t do, and is it worth the cost. I’ve even speculated on what might be in store for iPhone users. One thing that some people still don’t seem to understand is that, like the iPod, the iPhone is a platform, a handheld computer, if you will, that just happens to let you make calls. However, that’s not what I want to talk about, there being more than enough media coverage on this device, so I really can’t add anything significant. What I want to talk about are eBooks.

If video killed the radio star, will the iPod take out the DJ? Not quite, but if wedding planning message boards are any indication, more and more people are considering the cheap and convenient alternative to hired entertainment at weddings and other events. Adam Love and his wife, Jennifer, were looking at trying to keep their costs down and their ceremony intimate when they decided to use an iPod for their reception in 2005. My ears have attention deficit disorder. Or maybe it’s hyper-attention disorder. Phones ring, conversations go on at various decibels, fingertips hit keyboards, a colleague turns the pages of a book. I hear them all. Some of my officemates sit obliviously at their desks, wrapped in their own little worlds of music, the earbuds of their iPods tucked into the sides of their heads. I tried that. Got a shiny new nano for Christmas, loaded my tunes and popped in those earbuds. My ears must be deformed as well.

There are more iPod books out there than you can shake a stick at, so authors really need to do something unique to set their work apart. That’s exactly what Andy Ihnatko did by making his book iPod Fully Loaded appropriate for all iPods. Even better, this iPod book won’t be obsolete when Apple updates its media player product line. iPod Fully Loaded covers the basics, from navigating through iPod features to loading up iTunes and your iPod with music. However, it also goes well beyond the beginner topics.

iTunes may have a great selection of videos for sale, but consumers will always want more. Transferring supported media to the device is a very simple task — just drag the files into iTunes, hit Sync and it’s there. However, a problem arises when you want to watch media not produced in MPEG4 format, the format favored by the iPod. Fortunately, there are several applications that allow the conversion of nearly any video to satisfy the insatiable urge to devour every TV show and movie you own with your iPod.
