In five years, the number of mobile phone subscribers is expected to increase by almost two billion — at that point, the way people purchase goods and services could be forever changed. For now, text-messaging, or short message service, is chiefly used for communication, but businesses hip to m-commerce are brainstorming to come up with ways to use SMS for financial transactions. Part 1 of this two-part series looks at some successes in this field. Part 2 addresses some of the ways SMS will help drive m-commerce further and some problems businesses will face.

Originally established as part of a series of the global system for mobile communications standards in 1985, short message service, or SMS, has come to play a pivotal role not only in the evolution of personal mobile communications but in the development of m-commerce as well. In 2006, SMS — aka “text-messaging” — accounted for a large majority of total non-voice mobile service revenues worldwide, according to a Research and Markets April report.

Social networking is the best-known use of the Web 2.0 — just consider the popularity of MySpace and YouTube. Today, Web sites are so interactive and collaborative we now have a new way of communicating and staying in touch. Because of this, many have been wondering where the Web 2.0 — the latest evolution of the World Wide Web — is heading. Social networking will, in my opinion, continue to dominate the Web 2.0. In fact, its dominance will be enhanced by the capability of using mobile phones to input images and videos to social networking sites.
