An anonymous reader writes “‘The initial results of DRM-free music are good’ says Lauren Berkowitz, a senior vice president of EMI, at a music industry conference in New York. Berkowitz went on to say that the early results from iTunes indicate that DRM-free offerings may boost revenue from digital albums as well as individual songs.”

An anonymous reader writes “Michael Geist is reporting that a Canadian parliamentary committee has demanded that the government establish a Canadian DMCA. The demand, which comes in a study on counterfeiting and piracy (PDF) released on Wednesday night, recommends ratification of the WIPO Internet treaties, increasing damage awards for copyright infringement, creating new offenses for selling modification devices, and encouraging prosecutors to seek jail time for piracy violations.”

natch writes “While rummaging through some old records at an antique store I found some turn-of-the-century Victor Record Company pressings. The label on the back laid out the terms of use, something similar to an EULA. In today’s modern world of RIAA lawsuits and DRM, it’s interesting to note that similar tactics have been in use by record companies for over a century, restricting your right to use what you purchased. The label clearly states that unless the record was sold for at least one dollar, there is no license to use it.”

When a British blog author linked to a recent article about a defendant’s counterclaims for extortion and conspiracy by the RIAA in a Florida case, UMG v. A UK-based phone maker announced a flat-rate music download service for mobile phones in key European markets Thursday, getting it into stores two weeks ahead of Apple’s hotly anticipated iPhone. Omnifone launched MusicStation — which comes with subscription music access provided by multiple major labels — in several European countries. The iPhone, which will combine a full-function iPod with a smartphone, is scheduled for a June 29 release in the U.S. and overseas.
