Online movie download site CinemaNow will revive its two-year-old effort to sell music videos, hoping to fill a demand for content to be viewed on portable devices by increasing its inventory. The company first launched its Watchmusichere.com site in 2005 with a small selection of music videos. That site never quite found an audience, in part because the portable media devices that could play the videos never caught on. However, in light of iTunes’ success, CinemaNow has now decided to beef up its offerings.

Rachhpal writes “Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney will release his new album today — it’s called ‘Memory Almost Full.’ In an interview with the L.A. Times, he talked about ending his long-time relationship with EMI and making the new album fully downloadable through his new relationship with Starbucks’ Hear Music label. Some of his comments on the music industry: ‘I was bored with the old record company’s jaded view,’ McCartney says… ‘They’re very confused, and they will admit it themselves: that this is a new world, and they’re a little bit at a loss as to what to do. So they’ve got millions of dollars and X budget… for them to come up with boring ways — because they’ve been at it for so long — to what they call “market” it. And I find that all a bit disturbing.’”

newtley writes “Fake cops employed by the RIAA started acting like real police officers quite a while ago — one of the earliest examples unfolded in Los Angeles in 2004. From a distance, the bust, ‘looked like classic LAPD, DEA or FBI work, right down to the black “raid” vests the unit members wore,’ said the LA Weekly. That their yellow stenciled lettering read ‘RIAA’ instead of something from an official law-enforcement agency, ‘was lost on 55-year-old parking-lot attendant Ceasar Borrayo.’ But it’s also SOP for the RIAA to wield genuine officers paid for entirely from citizen taxes as copyright cops. Police were used in an RIAA-inspired raid at two flea markets in Beaverton, Oregon. ‘Sgt. Paul Wandell, Beaverton police spokesman, said officers seized more than 50,000 items worth about $758,000,’ says The Oregonian. But this is merely the tiny tip of an iceberg of absolutely staggering dimensions, an example [...]

Mateo_LeFou writes “Gulf News has a nice piece exposing the last couple generations of Apple’s DRM strategy (you didn’t really think they were abandoning DRM, did you?). Article focuses on how quickly the tactics are worked around, and how nasty the latest one is: purchased iTunes now have your personal data in them. Author suspects that this is to prevent you uploading them to a network.”

palewook writes “On June 7th, Yahoo, RealNetworks, Pandora, and Live365 sent letters to US lawmakers emphasizing they owe SoundExchange ‘administrative fees’ of more than $1 billion dollars a year. These fees would be paid for the ‘privilege’ of collecting the increased CRB royalties effective July 15th, unless the Internet Radio Equality Act passes Congress. SoundExchange, the non-profit music industry entity, admits the levied charge of $500 per ‘channel’ is supposed to only cover their administrative costs. Last year, SoundExchange collected a total of $20 million dollars from the Internet radio industry. Under the new ‘administrative fee’ RealNetworks, which hosted 400,000 unique subscribed channels in 2006, would owe an annual administrative charge of 200 million dollars in addition to the retroactive 2006 rate hike per song played.”
