Wachovia plans to open a call center in the Philippines early next year, marking the first time the Charlotte bank has shifted customer service functions offshore.
Wachovia will partner with Indian outsourcer Genpact in the project, according to a memo sent to employees Thursday and obtained by the Observer. The bank will run the facility, which will be staffed largely by Genpact employees. There, of course, is everywhere, but especially India and the Philippines, places that answer more phone calls from Americans than America. When outsourcing began, they didn’t call it “outsourcing” — they called it “sweatshops.” Today, outsourcing has expanded to include customer service. People in customer service who lose their jobs don’t call the process “outsourcing” either. They call it “$#@{circ} percent&**.”
