A bane of shutterbugs everywhere is the question of what to do with their photos after shooting them. The high-def DVD format wars took a turn Monday when Sony, backer of Blu-ray DVD technology, announced it has cut the price of a Blu-ray disc player by $100. The company’s latest model, the second-generation BDP-S300 available next week, will now sell for $499. “The BD format gained great momentum in the past several months, and we’re going to capitalize on that with the new model,” said Chris Fawcett, vice president of marketing for Sony Electronics’ home product division.

Sunblock. Beach umbrella. Laptop. One in five people toted laptop computers on their most recent vacations, an AP-Ipsos poll released Friday said. Along with the 80 percent who said they brought along their cell phones, the survey shows going on vacation no longer means being out of the electronic loop. Sizable numbers are interrupting their unwinding time to check in at the office and, even more so, to keep up with the social buzz. About one in five said they did some work while vacationing.

Microsoft garnered a lot of buzz this week after reports broke the software giant had shipped its 1 millionth Zune — putting it ahead of a company goal set shortly after it launched its MP3 player in November. However, those reports apparently were jumping the gun. Microsoft exec Robbie Bach was erroneously quoted as saying the device had already passed the 1 million milestone. However, Microsoft has confirmed that although it is on schedule to meet its goal of 1 million Zune sales by June 30, the target has not yet been reached.
