Microsoft will tweak Windows Vista to enable the easy use of other vendors’ desktop search applications, a response to a complaint by search giant Google. News of the agreement was included in an U.S. Department of Justice report on Microsoft’s compliance with final judgments to the U.S. versus Microsoft anti-trust case. As shipped, the Vista operating system includes a desktop search function that works in similar fashion to desktop search applications offered by Google and others.

Chinese Internet portal Sina and Google said Monday they have partnered to boost Sina’s search capabilities in news and advertising. Google’s Web page search service will be embedded in Sina’s search box to allow users to switch between online content and Web page searches. The partnership will expand into news and other content areas as well. “Sina is the most influential portal in China and a household brand in China’s Internet industry,” said Kai-Fu Lee, vice president of Google and president of Google Greater China.

Google Friday unveiled Google Calendar Gallery, a platform that allows one-click importing to Google Calendars of event and listing content found on other Web sites. Google has always envisioned Google Calendar to be capable of easing the hassle normally associated with calendar management, the company said. In announcing Google Calendar Gallery, the search giant noted an important part of realizing that goal was making it easy to search among public calendars for interesting events and add them to Calendar with a click.

Search engine Ask.com unveiled a major overhaul Tuesday that includes a new user interface and a wider variety of content, including video, returned in regular search results. The revamp is the latest in a series of moves undertaken by Ask as it bids to remain a player in the search space dominated by Google and Yahoo, and is aimed largely at making search a more visual experience for users. With Ask3D, as the upgrade is known, users can choose from a dozen different “skins” to liven up the background of the search home page.

The latest search engine safety report by McAfee SiteAdvisor states that Web search results are slowly getting safer, but it also asserts that search providers can do more to weed out sponsored links from scammers, malware spewers and other “bad actors.” Search engine companies have the ability to clamp down on unscrupulous search-based advertisers but seem to ignore the problem for fear of losing revenue, the report said. So-called organic searches are significantly safer than clicking on the sponsored search results that often result from those initial queries.
