Contactless payment systems are based on a wireless technology embedded into some credit and debit cards and even key fobs from the major card issuers. The systems use radio frequency identification technology to complete transactions between a card and a store terminal without the user swiping the card. Since card readers follow the ISO 14443 messaging standard, any business with a compliant reader can process card transactions from any contactless card, including those from Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Checkpoint Systems earlier this month rolled out a line of RFID-enabled labels with both advanced inventory control and item-tracking capabilities. The Thorofare, N.J.-based company said the dual-purpose label will help retailers consolidate their use of radio frequency identification technology. Checkpoint said the new label, called “Evolve,” carries an industry-standard Generation 2 RFID tag for tracking inventory and a separate radio frequency circuit to enable in-store electronic article surveillance to catch shoplifters.
