davidmwilliams points us to his story up on IT Wire about the top five most active open source projects on SourceForge. (Sourceforge.net and Slashdot are both owned by SourceForge Inc.) He writes, “It explains what they do and why they’re useful. Most of these will be new to most people but all are definitely bursting with potential.”

munchola sends us word that the Open Source Initiative is getting tough on any vendors who claim to be open source despite not actually using a license approved by the OSI. In his blog post, OSI president Michael Tiemann writes: “Enough is enough. Open Source has grown up. Now it is time for us to stand up. I believe that when we do, the vendors who ignore our norms will suddenly recognize that they really do need to make a choice: to label their software correctly and honestly, or to license it with an OSI-approved license that matches their open source label.”

There are lots of disk defraggers in the market, but Raxco PerfectDisk is one of the best that I’ve seen to date. Now the Gaithersburg, Md., company is expanding the scope of its flagship product to further improve computer performance and security. Raxco’s new product, PerfectDisk Rx Suite, is built around five components: a disk optimizer, a registry cleaner, a free space creator, a file eraser and a Windows settings tweaker. For the new offering, Raxco has redesigned PerfectDisk’s interface so it gives you a quick visual peek into the health of your computer.

Bugs or not, Apple’s Safari 3 Internet browser, a free public beta, tweaked the interest of a considerable number of Windows users. More than 1 million copies of the browser were downloaded within the first 48 hours of its availability, Apple announced Thursday. Unveiled Monday at the Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco, Safari 3, according to Apple, is the “world’s fastest and easiest-to-use browser.” The browser is compatible with Windows Vista and XP as well as the Mac OS.

A Taiwanese hardware manufacturer is gearing up to begin mass producing a mobile phone based on open source software, according to sources in Taipei. The NEO1973, from First International Computer, is planned as the first of a series of phones based around the OpenMoko platform. William Lai, of OpenMoko’s community development department, said that the 2.5G touch-screen phone will be available online from OpenMoko.com priced at $350. The phone is expected to be ready in September.
