We’ve been impatiently awaiting the red carpet arrival of Freestyle Audio’s Soundwave for a few seasons now, and at long last, it appears the units are shipping out — or, at least one made its way over to cousin site Gadling for a review. The Soundwave is pretty much exactly what you’d expect: a ho hum MP3 player with a rather unsightly design, a disgraceful user interface and the ability to operate where the vast majority of rivals cannot. The reviewer noted that controlling the action was a pain, though the internal battery could keep the jams flowing for well over a day. Of course, the biggest boon is its ability to keep on truckin’ while submerged in the pool (or the tub, whatever), and the included waterproof headphones were said to be surprisingly tolerable. Now, if only brown bags were waterproof…

Want to get a jump on your holiday shopping or find a couple of insane bargains to keep for yourself? A few retailers are offering what they’ve dubbed “Black Friday-style” price cuts for tomorrow — Saturday, November 8th. Walmart’s got a sweet 15.4-inch Compaq CQ-139WM (with 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive) laptop for $298, in addition to a PlayStation 2 bundled with a $30 WalMart gift card for $129, and a PlayStation 3 with a $100 gift card for $399. Over at Kmart they’re offering up a rad 32-inch Sylvania LCD HDTV for $439.99 (they usually go for for $550). They also have several deals for Sunday, November 9th, including the Wii Fit for $89.99. Is it safe to assume that every Friday (not to mention Saturday and Sunday) until Christmas will be “black”? For the full, mind-blowing rundown, hit the read links.

Like it or not California, it’s about time you folks ponied up for a serious rail system. With the recent passage of Proposition 1A, the wheels have started to churn on a sophisticated bullet train system that will eventually link San Diego in the south with Sacramento in the north, with stops at most every major city in between (LA and San Francisco included). The 800-mile network of trains would operate at upwards of 220mph and cost around $45 billion to construct, but it’ll create 320,000 permanent jobs by 2030 and reduce the state’s reliance on fossil fuel by 12.7 million barrels of oil per year. Unfortunately, there’s no set time frame for completion just yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see this one finished before that Anaheim – Las Vegas maglev project even gets off the ground.

While the iPod sound system boat has already sailed (numerous times), there’s always a minor boom in copycats when the holiday season draws near. Thankfully, ASUS’ latest contribution to the over-saturated market is one with a differentiating factor, as the AIR3 tunes into internet radio stations as well. According to the posted user’s guide in the FCC, the unit can play nice with dock-connecting iPods, stream WiFi radio stations and play back music from any other DAP via the 3.5-millimeter auxiliary jack. You’ll also find a 128 x 64 resolution FSTN graphics display, S-Video / composite video outputs, an Ethernet jack and a total of four drivers to kick out the jams. An obligatory remote is also bundled in, though there’s obviously no indication of a price tag or release date in those absolutely riveting FCC documents.

First it was just new colors; now, it’s just more Zune Originals designs to choose from. A half year after Microsoft tapped a gaggle of Canadian artists for a few more Originals designs, the suits up in Redmond have evidently deemed it suitable to give prospective Zune buyers another handful of choices. Or, you know, forty-six new choices. The new options include “exclusive artwork of Eastern and Western astrology from Catalina Estrada and Iosefatu Sua,” all of which can be selected now from the online design studio. Unfortunately, you’ll probably have to burn a vacation day just to sift through ‘em all, but at least you’ll be having fun. Maybe.
